Science of a Shovel
So what are the parts of a shovel? Most people would just say, "It's a stick with a metal square or triangle on the end." While that is true of a shovel, it's more complicated then that. the "stick" is called the shaft and the "metal part" is a blade. There's also a "shoulder" attached to a blade and a handle atop the shaft, as shown in the picture below. The shovel is a basic example of a class one lever. There is the load on one end (the items you're shoveling), the fulcrum is in the middle (the point the shovel is pivoting from, i.e the hand holding the middle of the shovel) and the effort on the other end (the movement, which is is being applied by your other hand in this instance)
